REally , where google will penalize duplicate content is on YOUR site. if you have multiple pages with the same or just slighty varied content. it will hurt your site's ability to rank. however, you CAN use duplicate content in syndication articles, although the sites that allow it are generally low quality article directories, and not very good anyway. As for spinning, I have used it for years, and in fact you can check out my Rapid Rewriter Review to see the spinner I use. However, I don't do it just for backlinks. I use it as a way to repurpose content, and I generally spend 2-3 hours spinning an article. The reason I like spinning is because I do it really well ( most people can't look at myy spun articles and tell which was the original) I can use it for my newsletters, ebooks, videos, and other content that I publish. i actually have a few posts on duplicate content.
