How Far Will Spammers Go?

How Far Will Spammers Go?

by James Pruitt on 07/25/2010

So, I log in today to moderate comments, and I always look through the spam folder, because occasionally a valid comment accidentally winds up there. I almost had to go to the hospital I was laughing so hard when I saw this one…

Note: I am editing this slightly to take out some adult content, and kill the 4 links they included in this crap…

“HELP! I’m currently being held prisoner by the Russian mafia xyzrxyz {edited for content} xyzrxyz and being forced to post spam comments on blogs and forum! If you don’t approve this they will kill me. xyzrxyz{edited for content}xyzrxyz They’re coming back now. xyzrxyz {edited for content}xyzrxyz Please send help!”

Just how far will people go to get their spam posted online? And the bad thing is, they actully are stupid enough to think someone will fall for it, and approve this crap.  Sorry but I get a little agitated when it comes to people spamming me and my friends.

I was torn between laughing so hard I split my side, and getting pissed that someone sent this crap to my blog. Anyway, I am wondering if I should report this to the authorities…( I doubt that there is any truth to the comment, but then again….spammers will do anything to get their crap online. why not start taking hostages?)

What do you think? Should I let it go, or try to report it to someone? Also, if you think I should report it, who should I turn it in to? I am stumped on this one.

Hi James,

“And the bad thing is, they actully are stupid enough to think someone will fall for it”

Some people just might unfortunately.

I searched a few of the words in quotes and its all over the place. One blogger who also got a chuckle from it said it reminded him of this issue of National Lampoon Magazine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Lampoon_(magazine)

Poor puppy. Look at that little face!! :)

But……did you at any point think to yourself, “what if it’s true?”
There might be some poor chap in downtown Moscow hobbling about without any teeth, toenails or testicles right now, simply because you didn’t moderate his mail….lol

Could you not have sent him a file inside a cake or something?

I thought about it until I saw the same one on 10 posts across 3 days. I just got another one using religion, and preaching at me. Guess they need to learn who they are sending that stuff to.

Really, I think it comes down to common sense. if i had access to an internet connection, and i was a hostage, I wouldnt send it out to some blogger that I don’t even know. Looking into it a little more, I have found about 75 other posts about it similar to mine.

That’s a new one that I haven’t seen before. I mean really, if the people left the room, I’m going to sign onto (in order) email, then Twitter, then Facebook to get my message out LONG before I hit up a blog comment for help. That’s just silly!

hi Kristi, I agree. if it was real, they would be messaging police not some blogger that they don’t even know where they are.

That’s really funny (although I doubt anyone would believe that)

I did tricked once though. It was a comment like this:
Hey, nice post, but your blog don’t display properly in blackberry type xxxx.

After a while, I just realized that it was just a diversion so I didn’t realize that he didn’t read my post at all. At the same time I also get similar comments such as
- commenting world cup result
- asking how to submit to rss
- asking if he can copy a quote in my post etc

I sent them all to the trash bin, but they keep coming anyway. I just wish there is something I can install to block them..
