Don't Be Lazy, Build your Blog Already

Why don’t you build your Blog yet?

Okay, I am going on a rant here for a minute. I have seen loads of people who are wanting to build a website, or a blog, but they never get it done. They go on and on about how they want to make money with their sites, but they wait until they have all this content and everything perfect before they will begin to publish and get it all online.

One of the worst things that you can do is to hide your website while you are building your content.  Who cares if you have any articles on it or not? I have 5 sites with about 3-4 articles each, and they will be that way for the next couple of months while I work on a few other projects.

Get your sites live asap. Unless you like leaving mony on the table.

For example, I have a site that I am working on. I am building it up over the next few months, recording some videos, and mainly building up the blog.  I am going to  have a simple membership site set up. Basically, the members get access to my blogs and monthly webinars, while the blog readers just get to read my ramblings, and maybe get an occasional taste of what the real members get.

The site is far from perfect. I am fighting the theme, (trying out Thesis theme on the new site, and still struggling to understand the whole hooks thing). I am also having to juggle the membership site plugin that I am using. Between the two, I am about ready to throw something against the wall. Now, this theme is awesome, and if you are a little experienced with php coding and html, you will love it. However, for the total newbie, I highly recommend finding something easier to start with.

The point is, although I am fighting this site, I still have it live. (ooohhh.. you wanna peek?   well, if you are nice, maybe I will give you one here in a bit…)

So, as I am going through the new site trying to get everything working right, on top of training a few new staff members, and trying to slam out some rewrites of Affilojetpacks for my buddy down under, I have just about gotten ready to use the best tool around that fixes almost any problem…..

Now, some people say this may be a little extreme, but personally, I think it should work. After all, if it doesn’t wanna work right, beat it into submission.

Luckily I wandered into Blog Success recently. They are an awesome crew, and they even have their own Thesis ninja in the house. I am sure Dave is really gonna get tired of hearing from me before too long.

But, no matter how imperfect the site is, I have it live and I am promoting it. I have already been getting some links flowing, and the buzz is getting started. If you want a site to be found, you have to get it in front of the crowd.

Build your blog. Over time it will get finished, and look just the way that you want it to. however, if you leave it sitting, it won’t ever get done.

By the way, the new site I mentioned is my new Online Blogging guide that I talked about in last week’s webinar. You can check it out, and if you sign up, you can catch the replay of the webinar in case you missed it. I installed a blog live, set up my basic theme, and went over the plugins that I use. In the second webinar (which should be online tomorrow at the latest) I covered some article writing tips, basic traffic strategies, and took some questions from the audience including some tips on rss feeds.

Once again they weren’t perfect, but what do you expect? It was my first time in front of the crowd. I have been doing a full critique, and learning a lot so that my next one will be better.

Whenever you start something new, give yourself a break. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but you should work to improve it over time.

(and if I don’t get things worked out on my other site, I am going to hit it with a bigger hammer until it submits)

So, what is stopping you? Why haven’t you started to build your blog yet?

I have some sites where before I was even done putting all 30 articles on them (for phase 1) I made a handful of sales w/o any promotion at all. So I totally agree with what you’re saying. :)

yeh, I recently had one that made its first 3 sales with only 4 badly optimized articles on the page. had 20 sign ups and a few sales within the first few days I put it up .

Totally agree James. Sometimes I’ll get a site up and let it ‘marinate’ for a few months before I get around to fleshing it out.

That way the domain is a little aged, and I can take my time building it out.

I do that myself. I have a few sites that are sitting that way right now, while I focus on other projects. I usually put them up, and set up an email capture with a few emails ready to go. I have a few that are already building up a list, although they only have a few pages on them, and those pages only have a few backlinks.

The benefits of blogging for businesses should definitely be considered. Not only that it serves as an effective means to give your business more exposure throughout the internet, but more importantly it also brings you closer to your target niche market. The technology we have today makes it extremely easy to manage and put up.
