6 Secrets to Making The Best Website Home Page Content

by James Pruitt on 11/05/2010

Every day, I am asked to review people’s websites, and the one thing that I consistently see is that the website home page content is often the worst page on the site. In order to create the best website home page, you need more than just a few lines of text. This is your best chance to establish your reputation or to destroy it before people even see anything else that you have to offer.

That is why I put together these 7 simple tips that you can follow to create the best website homepage content that you can. If you incorporate each of these onto your site, you will see your opt in rate skyrocket, return visits will rise, and people will trust you. You can make or break your success right here, so get it right from the start.

Introduce Yourself

One thing that I consistently see is people using a bland statement on their home page. You want to connect with readers, and tell them why they should trust your website. Introduce yourself, and explain your experience. This is your chance to establish your credibility with potential customers, so make the most of it.

Give Instant Advice

This seems to be simple, but 85% of the sites I see don’t do it. The home page is just a welcome page with no useful information. It doesn’t have to be much, but have one or two tips that can be applied to their problem right away. This will help you to establish your reputation within your niche

Explain What Your Site is About

Introduce what your site is about. Talk about the problems and empathize with your readers. Show them how your site will help fix the problems that they are facing.

Give a content overview

Write a short paragraph about each category on your site. Introduce the different topics that you will cover so that your readers can easily navigate your site. The easier you make it for people to find what they are looking for, the better the chance you will have of keeping them on your site.

Link to Internal Pages

Link to a few of your internal pages. As you do your content overview, you can link to an article or to the introduction for each category, so that you can lead people into the specific information which they are looking for to accomplish their goals.

Internal linking is one of the on site seo factors that will help your rankings. However, with most of your pages on an affiliate site, you don’t want a lot of links to pull people away from your offer. Using your home page will drive the internal links to your main category pages, and it will help guide people to the information they need right away.

Offer a Free Gift

This is an invaluable opportunity to get people onto your email list. At the end of the home page, thank them for coming by, and offer them a free gift of your opt in report or mini course. Invite them to sign up, then follow it with your opt in form. usually, the home page is the one page on a site without a specific product on it. My main focus is to get people to see the rest of the site and to get them on my list.

Once you get all these in place, your website home page content will shine. You will be able to drive more visitors and get people coming back for more.

So, today, I want to know what you are doing for your home page content. What all information do you include and what do you want to do to make it better?

Just stumbled across your post on the multitude of free directories for blogs and wanted to thank you for taking the trouble to put the information together. I hadn’t heard of a number of the sites before, and it’s always refreshing to find someone aggregating useful information that helps non-commercial (or only peripherally commercial) bloggers.

These are some good tips. You’re correct, most affiliate main pages don’t really have much of anything on them.

You have good points. I find putting up a nice picture on the home page effective, given that it somehow explains or is related to what the site is all about. Since most people want information fast, communicating through a picture might be the way to do it. :)
